About Us

In Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story (1995), actress Glenn Close portrays a decorated officer involuntarily discharged from the military for admitting she is homosexual,  With her impassioned plea for acceptance, Cammermeyer refers to all the essential people in our lives -- teachers, police, doctors, nurses, soliders, accountants, clerks, cashiers -- who are lesbian, bisexual, transgender or gay. Her legal challenge for violating "don't ask, don't tell" cries out that there is no greater right than the freedom to love.

We dedicate this page to Col. Cammermeyer for the courage to stand up for her convictions that all people have certain unalienable rights ... including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Founding Father

The driving force behind establishing the LGBT Center of SE Wisconsin is educator, advisor, and public relations consultant Bruce H. Joffe, Ph.D., who serves as our executive director.

 Bruce H. Joffe
A professor who taught Gay & Lesbian Studies courses,  Dr. Joffe has been on the faculties of The American University, George Mason University, and Mary Baldwin College before relocating from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to Wisconsin, where he now serves on the faculties of both Carthage College and Cardinal Stritch University.  His research continues to explore gender ambiguity in the media, sexual minorities and cultural norms ... and how "social networking" Internet sites impact GLBT/Q folks.

Joffe's remarkable book A Hint of Homosexuality? 'Gay' and Homoerotic Imagery in American Print Advertising (2007) has won quite a few awards and critical acclaim for its examination and analysis of over 200 ads in which the author concludes that "Gay imbroglio and innuendo tease at us amind subliminal elements seductively perceived and strategically portrayed."

An enigmatic Jewish man twice married and divorced, Joffe became a Christian more than 25 years ago.  Today he lives with his long-time partner, Russ, and their pets in downtown Racine. Square Peg in a Round Hole, a very personal coming out saga, tells the story of Joffe's redemption and personal acceptance.
